Infrared Thermography Testing In Las Vegas

The use of infrared thermography in finding anomalies within building structures is not a new concept. There are many different types of camera systems and manufacturers who produce infrared cameras such as Flir and Fluke for example.  Infrared cameras are not X-ray machines but rather complex camera systems that detect heat. The heat, once detected is put into colors as seen through the screen of these cameras. Infrared cameras cannot see through walls. They can only detect temperatures on the surface.

Because Infrared thermal cameras are becoming more affordable, more and more do-it-yourselfers and self-proclaimed thermographers are using them for various activities in construction. But make no mistake, not all operators of the infrared camera know how to use them or apply construction basics to the results. Only a level III infrared thermographic would be hired to administer tests especially when it comes to water intrusion.

The Use of Infrared Camera and Water Intrusion Testing

Infrared cameras play an essential role in water intrusion testing. Many of the water tests we perform such as the ASTM E1105, utilize the infrared camera, as part of its testing protocol. Some of the tests we perform rely on the infrared camera to locate water intrusion because like in Hospitals, we are quite often not allowed to remove building materials during testing. Removing the interior building materials during water intrusion testing is almost always necessary to locate and confirm the leak source. However, if that’s not possible, an infrared camera is the next best thing.

What Types of Water Intrusion Testing Do You Use An Infrared Camera For?

So most of the time that we are using an infrared camera, we are using it on the inside of the building on the opposite side of the water spray rack. Here in Las Vegas, most homes are made of stucco on the outside and wood framed on the inside. Believe it or not, stucco can be tested for water penetration. Flat roofs are another building component that can be tested with an infrared camera.  Another type of building system that can easily be tested with thermography are windows and doors.
